To your customer, the browser is just the box that holds your web page.
To you, it’s a business environment. You’re going to need programming inside the box to interact with your customer and outside the box to manage your site.
With a toolbox full of server-side know-how and the CSS / XHTML / Javascript expertise to work in the browser, I can help you get it done, whatever “it” is.
Server-side: I'm an experienced PHP programmer and well-versed in the mighty PHP/MySQL pair. Most of my current work utilizes .htaccess files to provide more organized control over the separation of logic and display. I work with AJAX techniques frequently.
My PHP is at a level that I can do a tremendous amount of content management, even various file/image upload and editing, but I still seek assistance for security and various server administration.
In-Browser: A nut for valid XHTML, a CSS wizard and a kid at play with Javascript, I really enjoy putting it all together on the screen. From straightforward clean layouts to nested navigation menus to FAQ pages and easy-to-use contact forms, you won't need to worry about how to do it.
My HTML and CSS are both very strong. On the other hand, I still don't have formal training on what different doctypes or MIME types are for. Nevertheless, you'll notice all of my pages are XHTML-compliant with rare exception, and I have very strong use of all common HTML elements and page structures).
My Javascript is at the point where I can handily perform most simple DOM manipulation and develop small widgets / plugins. I'm still learning more advanced OOP (for some projects I have my eye on like an XHTML-compliant Rich Text Editor, and whatever else might come along).
Graphic Design: While proficient (all the designs you see on this page are my own), I often work collaboratively with professional graphic designers to produce top-notch templates. The handoff works well - they can do what they do best, and then I can slice and dice flat media to prepare it for some XHTML / CSS magic and installation on a live page.
Consulting: I really enjoy business. Maybe that's why I've received comments about my ability to listen to a client's needs and even to elicit the information that helps clarify those needs. I'll enjoy following a laid out plan or helping you focus your project goals to get the most out of each dollar you spend.
I have a brief internet career, but enjoy that I can offer a very professional level of service that may perhaps meet your needs. So far, I've always found myself excited to learn new things in the line of work.
Prior to my experience in the internet (and sometimes concurrent to), I operated a weight-loss business with my wife for a year and had a year-and-a-half of personal training experience before that.
Going back even earlier, I held several labor positions around town (up here in Big Bear Lake we just call it "around town") with various employers, including the local ski resort.
I have 2 ½ years of college / university experience, mostly studying business. I stopped with a GPA above 3.5 (just so you know I was not a miserable failure in this endeavor) to pursue the more interesting pastime of actually getting experience running businesses.
Here is a brief collection of samples for you to peruse. If you don't see a particular technique here that is essential to your project, please send an email and inquire.
I also have some PHP applications available that require a login and a few PHP / Javascript projects in development. You're welcome to inspect any of these by arrangement if it helps you make a decision.
The official web home of Ted and his lovely wife's network marketing business.
With a budget of just over $800, this site turned out nicely, although a web designer often finds it easier and faster to build a site for themselves because there is less back-and-forth time approving designs and layout.
Features:
A travel blog for some very dear travelers.
The project initially took some $1,200, but subsequent ongoing design updates (like adding new images to the photos that rotate in the header graphic) have posed a slight ongoing cost.
Features:
Another log for friendly travelers, this site came in under the $500 mark. The owners make their own updates.
Features:
A local non-profit needed a site to list some of their events. The clients were very involved in the design process, especially picking the colors. Yet the real beauty of this site is the simplicity.
Features:
A static, informational site for a local politician. From a very personal, signed letter on the homepage to plenty of images of local supporters, the site turned out very well.
At well under $800, the clients felt they got a great value.
Features:
A fun site with a fresh, peppy look. This Bike Shop needed to have an online brochure for referrals from the local Resort Association, Google Maps and various online Yellow Pages listings.
The build has no real back-end and was extremely affordable at around $600.
Features:
Owned by a guy who is himself very tech-savvy, this site gets a lot of use. It is set up as a template that he can add HTML pages to easily (he uses Adobe Dreamweaver).
The site has a prolific number of pages and he adds to them all the time, earning him no modest rankings in the search engines!
Features:
Tabby - the jQuery tabs in textarea plugin. The inspiration for this came during a three-day programming fest a while back. The page has a full explanation, but the project as a whole demonstrates technical proficiency with Javascript.
